There is a lot talk in the market about the future of analytics and what will make BI pervasive, something I’ve posted on recently. A common theme has emerged around delivering a solution to end users that meets their needs for metrics and KPIs that relate to their area of the business. Michael Miller’s post on PC Magazine highlights the “big strategic trends that will drive IT in 2011” according to a Gartner report in which “Next Generation Analytics” rose to #3. Similarly, Forrester analyst Gene Leganza’s post on the “Top 15 Technology Trends Enterprise Architects Should Watch” includes BI among the top 3 most important technologies (62%), right behind “Mobile devices and/or apps” (73%) and “Collaboration/Web 2.0/social media” (63%). Analyst, author and ZDNet blogger Joe McKendrick expanded on Forrester’s 15 trends in this post. Ranked #1 for the next few years, he says: “Next-gen BI takes shape, combining real-time access with pervasiveness, agility, and self-service.” It’s an exciting era in BI, where solutions from companies like PivotLink are giving more people the ability to analyze, measure and monitor their business activities.
Brian McDonough from IDC relates what we are doing at PivotLink with these same BI trends in a recent blog of his. He calls out SaaS as just not a means of saving dollars, but an opportunity to focus on the value provided by a solution. It speaks to companies needing BI solutions that allow them to adjust to dynamic market changes - companies like Macys.com that described this evolution in a recent webinar. Analyzing your business activities provides the insight to make smart decisions. However, if your business is not able to adjust and ramp up when needed or ramp down opportunities may be missed. If you BI can’t keep up, then you may not realize the full value of our solution. The flexibility in SaaS inherently allows for more power to be added to your analytics (add more metrics, more data sources, etc) as your company requires.
Tell us what you think of these BI trends and what’s hot on your radar for 2011.
